NDT TRAINING – Liquid Penetrant Testing I
The method can be applied to any non-absorbent material with uncoated surfaces. This course has been developed in line with SNT-TC-1A to develop the interested individuals as ASNT Level- I to be able to perform and report liquid penetrant testing (PT) result testing of metals and this is to be conducted under the supervision of ASNT Level II and other engineering professionals. Penetrant testing involves adding a visible or fluorescent dye to the surface. The dye goes into the discontinuities through the capillary action. This method is suitable to be applied to any non-absorbent material that has an uncoated surface
There are responsibilities that are expected of any individual that has been certified to operate in the capacity of a dye penetrant inspector. Such an individual must be ready to demonstrate a level of competence and be able to carry out NDT according to written instruction and under the supervision of Level 2 or Level 3 personnel. This should also be done within the scope of the position and competence that is defined on the certificate. The Penetrant level I inspector can also be authorized by the employer to carry out certain instructions in accordance with the NDT instructions. Some of these instructions include setting up penetrant testing equipment, performing the penetrant inspection test, record and classifying the result of the test according to criteria, and being able to report the result. The level I certified personnel would not be responsible for the choice or test method of the technique to be used and would not also be responsible for interpreting the result.
The Liquid Penetrant training course would provide theory lectures and practical training classes to equip interested individuals with the right type of preliminary understanding of what the Liquid Penetrant test involves. This training course also encourages the use of practical discussion among the participants of the training. Thus, the participants would be able to handle practical problems and would work closely with the expertise to make the process of comprehension easier. They would also be given the opportunity to work and be able to make attempts at solving these practical problems or relying on the expertise that they have been provided to solve these problems.
At the end of the practical training course, the candidates would be able to perform an inspection of samples of the liquid penetrant test. The course training revolves around the basic principles on liquid penetrant testing, an inspection of measurement of samples, familiarity with the scope and limitation of the method, and the introduction to ASTM and ASME standards and specifications.
At the end of the course training, the individual will appear for the Level I exam. The individual will be certified after the completion of the examination. This course training is beneficial to the companies and individuals would be able to perform specific calibration, specific NDT, specific evaluations for acceptance or rejection determinations according to the written instructions of the test and to also record results. The NDT Level I personnel should be able to receive necessary instruction and supervision from a certified NDT level II personnel.
This training course span a period of three days. The examination is in accordance with the ANST std SNT-TC-1A by ANST Level III professional. The candidates are permitted to make use of an electronic calculator if it does not have an alphanumeric keyboard. This is so because no books, pare, or charts are allowed. The individuals during the training are also permitted to make use of a translation dictionary but no electronic dictionary is allowed.
